Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to animals. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. Naming conventions

[edit]

Common (vernacular) names are not capitalised (except where proper names appear).

Article content

[edit]

For articles where a common name is used for the article title, the consensus way to write the combination of common name plus scientific name in the lead is (per this discussion):

The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an even-toed ungulate mammal....

Namely, bold common name followed by bolded and italic scientific name in parentheses.
